Description

In the Antiquarium is a stretch of the late Republican walls, ordered by Octavian in 33-32 B.C. to defend the colony of Tergeste, perched on top of the hill of San Giusto. The walls are crossed at their base by a canal to allow for the outflow of waters coming from the side of the hill. At the beginning of the second century. A.D. the walls, by now without a function, served as a containment and terracing structure for the buildings constructed uphill from them and here one can observe a terracotta pavement, probably used in processing oil .

Peculiarities

The' opus spicatum' is the arrangement of tiles or bricks in the form of an ear of wheat or 'herringbone' and represents a typical technique of the Roman era when making floors.

Not to be missed

1. Canal to carry the flow of water coming from the side of the hill dug out of the section of the city walls dating back to the time of Octavian;
2. 'Herringbone ' or opus spicatum paving in terracotta, probably used in oil processing;
3. Restoration of the ancient stretch of the walls to their original form.
